Why self-care is not a luxury – but essential for survival

For a long time, I thought self-care was something you could only afford once "everything else is done"—once the day was planned out, the to-do list checked off, and everyone else taken care of. I often ignored what my body was telling me. Especially with PMDD, HPU, exhaustion, or sensitive digestion, it was a vicious cycle: the more I neglected myself, the louder my body screamed.

Today I know: Self-care is not a luxury. It is essential for survival – and the first step towards a life with more balance, energy and inner peace.


Self-care is more than a cup of tea

It's not about occasionally taking a bath or lighting a scented candle. True self-care means listening to your inner voice:


  • What do you really need?

  • What nourishes you – physically, emotionally, mentally?

  • And how can you take good care of yourself today – even if the day is full?


Especially if you're dealing with menstrual cycle issues like PMDD, fatigue, digestive problems, or HPU, your body needs extra attention. You don't function like a robot. Your nervous system, your hormones, your digestion – they're sensitive. And they need you.


Self-care also means setting boundaries.

I've learned that saying "no" is also a form of self-love. That it's okay to cancel appointments, need breaks, or not always have to be strong. And: that my worth doesn't depend on my performance.


What helps me – maybe it will help you too

Here are a few things that have helped me to reconnect with myself:


  • A daily micro-routine with movement, stillness, and connection to myself.

  • Mindful and nutrient-rich food that supports my gut – instead of burdening it.

  • Oils to regulate my nervous system during PMDD

  • Walks in nature – preferably in the morning

  • Surround myself with people who truly see me.

  • TriloChi and Laughter Yoga

  • Contact with animals

  • And: to allow myself not to be perfect .
