A personal insight from Johanna Schneider – Holistic Health Coach for Balance, Gut Health, and Nervous System Regulation.

I used to believe that I had to have everything under control before starting something new – the perfect timing, the ideal body, the perfect life. But life doesn’t wait until we’re ready. And at some point, I simply stopped waiting.
With my PMDD, there are phases when my body pulls me back, sometimes even stops me completely.
In the past, it felt like a setback – but today I know it’s a signal to slow down and listen to my nervous system. And that’s exactly what led me to vanlife – a way of living that helps me return to my balance again and again.
🏕️ Vanlife – More Than Just an Adventure
For many, vanlife means freedom and adventure. For me, it’s above all an invitation to live closer to my needs – and to give my body the space it often doesn’t get in an apartment or an office.
More nature. More quiet. More freedom to follow my own rhythm.
When I open the van door in the morning and take the first breath of forest, fog, or sea air, I can feel my nervous system calming. My thoughts become quieter. It’s not a big “aha” moment – more a gentle return to myself.

🌸Balance on the Road – Living in a Van with PMDD & Sensitive Digestion
Vanlife may sound romantic, but it also comes with its challenges. With PMDD, HPU, and a sensitive digestion, I need routines that keep me grounded. I prepare simple, gut-friendly meals, plan breaks, and create small pockets of calm – no matter where I am.
I’ve learned to listen to my body on the road: What do I need today? How can I structure my day so my nervous system stays in balance?
Vanlife reminds me that self-care is not a luxury – it’s the foundation for well-being, especially (and perhaps even more so) while on the move.

🌊Finding My Own Rhythm in Vanlife
There are days when I feel strong – I work in the van, move my body, cook healthy meals, and enjoy the sunset. And there are days when I simply stay still, because my body needs it. In the past, I would have seen this as a weakness. Today I recognize: this is cyclical living. This is balance.
In vanlife, I’m learning not to resist life, but to flow with it – with my hormones, my energy levels, and my boundaries.
For me, vanlife is not a retreat, but a way to live in alignment with my body. Not perfect, but present. Not always easy, but honest.

🌼 Conclusion – Vanlife as a Path to Greater Balance
Vanlife has taught me that balance is not a fixed state, but a constant act of readjusting.

Whether it’s with PMDD, HPU, or simply a sensitive nervous system, vanlife reminds me every day that I get to shape my own routine in a way that feels good for me.
It’s not a perfect life, but it’s a real one. And that’s exactly what brings me closer to my balance – every day, one mile at a time.
