How I learned to listen to my cycle – instead of fighting against it.

A personal insight from Johanna Schneider - Holistic Health Coach
For a long time, my cycle felt like my biggest enemy. I could only really function one or two weeks a month – the rest was marked by exhaustion, irritability, low moods, pain, shame, and frustration.
I thought I had to be “stronger.” I thought I just had to push through. But the harder I fought, the more disconnected I became from my body – and from myself.
It wasn’t until my own journey with PMDS, HPU, burnout, and digestive issues that I understood: my body is speaking to me. My cycle isn’t a flaw – it’s a finely tuned, powerful system seeking balance.
I had to learn not to suppress or ignore it, but to listen. To notice when I need to retreat. When I’m creative. When my body craves rest – and when I can flourish.
And no – things still don’t always run perfectly. I still have days when my body slows me down or my energy is at rock bottom.
But now, I handle it differently:
I no longer fight against myself – I support myself.
I give my body what it needs.
I plan ahead,
allow myself intentional breaks,
prioritize regular movement,
optimize my nutrition and nutrient intake,
maintain nourishing routines, and treat myself with kindness.
Today, I live more in harmony with my cycle. I’ve started to stop judging myself – and instead, to understand myself. And this is exactly what I now help other women to do.
If you feel like your body “isn’t working properly” or your cycle is driving you “crazy” – you are not alone. And you are not broken. Perhaps your path to more balance begins exactly where you stop fighting… and start listening.
