🌍 Volunteering in Tanzania: Nutrition, Education & Sustainable Child Development

written by Johanna Schneider - Holistic Health Coach

When Nutrition Becomes Education

My time as a volunteer in Tanzania showed me how strongly nutrition, education, and environment influence a child’s development.

It was never about theory or perfection, but about simple, practical approaches that can truly be applied in everyday life.

A central question throughout my work was:👉 How can children build better health and social opportunities despite difficult living conditions?

Nutrition Education in Schools in Tanzania

In schools, I provided nutrition education for children in a playful, visual, and easy-to-understand way.

Instead of complex rules, we focused on simple foundations:

🌈 Variety on the plate

🍎 2 portions of fruit per day

🥦 3 portions of vegetables per day

The goal was to raise awareness without pressure.

Especially in regions with limited access to diverse foods, nutrition education for children can lay an important foundation for long-term health.

Sport & Nutrition: Football as a Learning Space

Another important part of my work was supporting a football team.

But it wasn’t just about sport — it was about the connection between movement and nutrition.

I provided nutrition education directly in the sports context so the children could understand how to support their bodies for training and performance.

Instead of theory, the focus was on practical understanding:

🌱 What gives energy for training?

🍎 Which foods support endurance and recovery?

🥦 What does simple sports nutrition look like in everyday life?

Children growing up in difficult social environments especially benefit from this kind of structure. Many face challenges such as poverty, lack of perspective, or exposure to drugs in their surroundings.

Sport combined with nutrition created something powerful:

👉 Structure in daily life👉 A sense of community👉 Motivation & goals👉 A positive environment

Project Work: Garden, Environment & Education

Alongside nutrition and sport, I was able to raise around €3,000 in donations together with friends and supporters to implement additional projects:

🌱 Building a community garden for self-sufficiency

♻️ Introducing waste separation and environmental awareness

📚 Educational work in schools

All of these projects shared one goal: Creating sustainable foundations that go beyond the moment.

Everyday Life on Site

Daily life in many regions of Tanzania is shaped by limited resources:

  • Cooking over open fire

  • Only a few hours of electricity per day

  • Limited access to fresh food

This reality makes it very clear how important targeted nutrition education and health promotion is for long-term development.

Cycle Education for Girls: Nutrition, Sport & Body Awareness

Another important part of my work was providing cycle education for girls.

Many young girls have little access to clear knowledge about their bodies, their cycle, and the changes that come with it.

Yet this knowledge is essential for self-awareness, health, and long-term well-being.

I explained the menstrual cycle in a simple and practical way — without taboo, without shame, but with understanding for the body.

A key focus was the connection between:

🌸 Nutrition

🌸 Movement / sport

🌸 Nutrient supply

The female cycle is highly sensitive to lifestyle factors and can be positively supported through balanced nutrition and appropriate movement.

The First 1000 Days of Life

A particularly important part of my work was raising awareness about the first 1000 days of life — from pregnancy until around the age of two.

This period lays the foundation for:

✨ Metabolism

✨ Immune system

✨ Brain development

✨ Long-term health outcomes

Nutrition and environment during this time have a lasting impact on a child’s entire development.

Epigenetics: How Environment Shapes Development

Research increasingly shows that genes alone do not determine our development.

This field is called epigenetics.

It describes how environment, nutrition, and lifestyle can influence which genes are active or inactive.

👉 This means: life conditions and experiences can shape biological processes.

What I Take From This Experience

This experience deeply changed my perspective on health, nutrition, and education.

I learned that:

✨ Small steps can create big impact

✨ Education is a key for change

✨ Health begins in everyday life

✨ Community creates opportunity

Why This Matters to Me Today

These experiences are now directly reflected in my work in holistic health, nutrition, and family support.

My goal is to show people simple, realistic ways to improve health in everyday life — without pressure, but with clarity and understanding.

This article demonstrates that social change can begin with simple contributions such as nutrition education, physical activities, community gardens, and environmental education. This concept is highly relevant to students’ contributions to society through sustainable social activities.
