Optimal Nutrient Supply – Why It’s So Important for Energy, Balance & Overall Well-Being

Written by Johanna Schneider – Holistic Health Coach

Many people believe they are “healthy” simply because they’re not on sick leave or don’t have any acute symptoms. But the reality is often very different:

Most people move through life with only half a battery — with low energy, a tired nervous system, poor concentration, mood swings, and a body that is constantly operating in energy-saving mode.

And this is exactly where the topic of optimal nutrient supply begins.

What does optimal nutrient supply actually mean?

It means that your body has enough:

  • vitamins

  • minerals

  • trace elements

  • essential fatty acids

  • amino acids

to carry out all important processes effectively — metabolism, hormone regulation, energy production, nervous system balance, digestion, immune function, muscle strength, and so much more.

This has nothing to do with perfectionism or biohacking — it’s simply basic nourishment.

Just like a car only runs when it has enough oil, fuel, and water, your body can only function optimally when it is properly supplied with nutrients.

Why many people are not optimally nourished

We live in a time where:

  • Soils are depleted and contain fewer nutrients

  • Stress increases nutrient consumption

  • Medications can deplete essential nutrients

  • Digestion & absorption are often impaired for various reasons

  • Vegetarian and vegan diets make certain nutrients harder to obtain

That’s why food alone is often not enough.

Blood Values: Why You Shouldn’t Rely Only on the Basic or Comprehensive Blood Panel

The basic or comprehensive blood panel shows almost nothing about real nutrient deficiencies. It mainly reflects:

  • red & white blood cells

  • inflammation markers

  • a few basic parameters

But none of the key micronutrients that are essential for energy, the nervous system, and metabolic health.

Many important markers must be:

  • requested separately

  • paid for out of pocket

  • chosen consciously

Why It Matters How Your Lab Values Are Tested

Here is an example almost no one knows:

Magnesium should ALWAYS be tested in whole blood – not in serum.

Why?

  • Serum only shows a tiny snapshot that says very little about your true magnesium status.

  • Whole blood shows what actually arrives inside the cells – which means what is truly available for your metabolism.

This also applies to many other markers — some are best measured in serum, some in whole blood, and others are most accurate when tested in urine.

I personally have all my key values tested 1–2 times a year. Not because I’m anxious – but because I’ve learned how much my body benefits from knowing its needs.

By now, I know:

  • which nutrients I use up more quickly

  • which ones my body absorbs less efficiently

  • where I need more support

  • which supplements help me maintain energy and balance

And this has transformed my health:

✨ I have fewer symptoms.✨ My energy is more stable.✨ My nervous system is more resilient.✨ And I feel more balanced in my everyday life.

Vegetarian & vegan nutrition: why special attention is important

A vegetarian or vegan diet can be incredibly healthy, but it requires careful planning. Without it, certain essential nutrients may be lacking, which can affect energy, immunity, and overall well-being. Paying attention ensures your body gets everything it needs to thrive.

Key points to watch:

  • Vitamin B12 – often low in plant-based diets and crucial for energy and nerve health.

  • Iron – plant sources are less easily absorbed, so intake and pairing with vitamin C are important.

  • Omega-3 fatty acids – mainly found in fish, so plant-based sources or supplements are recommended.

  • Protein – variety of plant proteins ensures all essential amino acids.

  • Vitamin D & Calcium – important for bones and immune function.

Regular testing and mindful planning help prevent deficiencies and support long-term

health.

Why optimal nutrient intake is so powerful

I avoid the term “self-healing powers,” but you can think of it that way:

A body can only regulate, repair, and maintain balance effectively if it has everything it needs to do so.

With optimal nourishment, the body can become active again – instead of just compensating.

Example from my everyday life

For years, I thought I was just “tired” or “sensitive.” Only through proper nutrient support did I realize:

  • My body was severely lacking in resources.

  • My energy reserves never had the chance to fully recharge.

Now I have more energy, greater stability, and fewer fluctuations.

It changes your whole life.
